So, a lot of people are curious where the name Hiro came from.
We started out intent on having a reasonably unusual name, we felt that was important to us. I think the first name we landed on, for a girl, was Apple. Some celeb (paltrow?) named her kid that and we thought it as a great name. We tossed around a couple others, which I don’t remember now. We also were watching Heroes on tv at the time. We both liked the character, and thought “hey, Hiro’s a good name.”
Then, I remembered that it was a characters name in one of my favorite books of all time. Yes, Cousin Dan, you called it. “Snow Crash“. The main character is Hiro Protagonist, which I always thought was a damn clever name.
Then she pointed out that Hero is also a name in Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”. It’s a girls name in the play. It’s got to be a good name, it’s in SHAKESPEARE!
The more we thought about it, the more we liked it. We kept coming back to it every time. We were unsure if it was going to be Hiro or Hero, but we liked both. It’s good strong name, unusual, but memorable. It’s harder to mangle (a pet peeve of mine) or turn into grade school taunts.
So, yeah, it was inspired by the TV show, but it really stuck itself in our brains due to the literary connections it had. We like, and we have had lots of compliments on it.

So, today we visited the doctor to check up on him. Since he’d had the fever and lost some amount of weight his first couple days the doctor wanted to see us sooner than later.
His weight was up from when he left the hospital, his eyes were moist and clear and focussing, his color was good, and he’s very active. All good signs. We still need to keep working on his weight, but he’s healthy and in good shape.
Today was the first day since leaving the hospital that we left the house all together. It takes a bit more thinking about what we need to carry with, and what all needs to go. We’d like to be able to carry stuff with us, but not look like those harried mall moms with eight bags of stuff. She found a nice looking daiper bag a bit ago, that doesn’t look like a daiper bag. When she brought it home I thought she had bought a large handbag and was going to call it a daiper bag. Which is what it looks like, a normal ladies (fashionable, and black) handbag. But it really is a daiper bag, with small changing pad, and lots of pockets for stuff. Perfect.
We venture out again today to do the family holiday things. Uncle Matthew’s family gets to meet Hiro today, and we’ll be having a nice ham dinner. We’ll see how long we can manage, since we’re still getting used to his schedule, and trying to mesh ours with his.

They are starting to maybe get used to it, and Spike is very curious about this thing. Angel, not so much.
We’re trying to figure out a lot of things, first what’s for breakfast, but after that we’ve got things like just what the heck are we gonna do about Christmas, since we’ve done no thinking about it up till now. We also need to sort through all the wonderful gifts that people got us at the shower and after, and pull out the stuff we need right now. Thankfully we’re probably good on newborn diapers, but I know there are some blankets in there, and some wipes that we need.
Plus, after all that I really really want some Chai, I haven’t been to Starbucks to get my fix since before we started. I didn’t get a cup the day we went in, and when we got out of hospital, we went straight home. But now, I think it’s time. or very soon to be time. I probably need to head out to Safeway to forage for some things, and get some baby items. You know, down that aisle you all skip in the store.
