What’s in a Name?

So, a lot of people are curious where the name Hiro came from.
We started out intent on having a reasonably unusual name, we felt that was important to us. I think the first name we landed on, for a girl, was Apple. Some celeb (paltrow?) named her kid that and we thought it as a great name. We tossed around a couple others, which I don’t remember now. We also were watching Heroes on tv at the time. We both liked the character, and thought “hey, Hiro’s a good name.”
Then, I remembered that it was a characters name in one of my favorite books of all time. Yes, Cousin Dan, you called it. “Snow Crash“. The main character is Hiro Protagonist, which I always thought was a damn clever name.
Then she pointed out that Hero is also a name in Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”. It’s a girls name in the play. It’s got to be a good name, it’s in SHAKESPEARE!
The more we thought about it, the more we liked it. We kept coming back to it every time. We were unsure if it was going to be Hiro or Hero, but we liked both. It’s good strong name, unusual, but memorable. It’s harder to mangle (a pet peeve of mine) or turn into grade school taunts.
So, yeah, it was inspired by the TV show, but it really stuck itself in our brains due to the literary connections it had. We like, and we have had lots of compliments on it.
