So, we went to the doctors office today to get his one year check up.
Some stats:
Weight: 19 lbs 7 oz.
Height: 29.5″
Head Circumference: 47.6 cm
He got his shots just fine, with a little bit of crying, and he and his parents all got flu shots (with only minimal crying on the parents part.)
All healthy signs in development, and while a little under weight still healthy, and active. We’re in the midst of switching from bottles to solid foods, and in a couple months we’re going to start looking at maybe moving to a sippy cup for all liquids. (big step). He’s been steadily working his way into real foods, and we’ve been doing at least one real food meal a day for a while.
So, baby is healthy and developing just fine according to the doctor, with some of his motor skills being above average.
The next big move for us is moving from the car seat we have, to a non-removeable forward facing car seat. We’ll do that in January sometime, and we’ll put the current carseat/stroller frame away. Which is sad, because it was so functional and awesome. I highly recommend to any parents out there, this is the way to go. Forget those big all in one stroller things, they’re just too bulky and expensive. We loved our minimalist one, and it worked wonders.

He’s been taking little steps (and usually falling down) but tonight he took lots steps in a row! We had him walking back and forth between us, and then captured this video. It’s small and grainy but you can certainly see the little guy WALKING!
It’s pretty cool! He’s still a bit (a lot) unstable at it, but we both feel he’s doing more than just stepping, this is walking.
Crazy!!

Woot. My first one ever.
Back at home though, Hiro gave me an awesome present. He nearly crawled. We had him on the floor, and I was sitting away from him a little and holding a toy he likes. He rolled around a bit, got ahold of the couch with his feet, and pushed against it to go forward. He’s got the elements of crawling there, you can see it, he’s moving arms and feet, and trying to motivate towards something. It’s so close, you can see it. He also is very very close to sitting up on his own. The picture in the blog is him sitting up, he can do it for short bursts. and you can see him correcting a little, trying to stay balanced. Sometimes it works, sometimes he falls over.
He will balance for a while, until he gets whatever it was he was going for into his mouth, and then he forgets he’s balancing and starts chewing on the toy, and over he goes.
It’s pretty cool to watch him go through these learning points, you can see it happening for the first time, which is neat!

the Threadless shop @ blik – Fresh Produce
seems like a cool way to decorate Hiro’s room.

So, a lot of people are curious where the name Hiro came from.
We started out intent on having a reasonably unusual name, we felt that was important to us. I think the first name we landed on, for a girl, was Apple. Some celeb (paltrow?) named her kid that and we thought it as a great name. We tossed around a couple others, which I don’t remember now. We also were watching Heroes on tv at the time. We both liked the character, and thought “hey, Hiro’s a good name.”
Then, I remembered that it was a characters name in one of my favorite books of all time. Yes, Cousin Dan, you called it. “Snow Crash“. The main character is Hiro Protagonist, which I always thought was a damn clever name.
Then she pointed out that Hero is also a name in Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing”. It’s a girls name in the play. It’s got to be a good name, it’s in SHAKESPEARE!
The more we thought about it, the more we liked it. We kept coming back to it every time. We were unsure if it was going to be Hiro or Hero, but we liked both. It’s good strong name, unusual, but memorable. It’s harder to mangle (a pet peeve of mine) or turn into grade school taunts.
So, yeah, it was inspired by the TV show, but it really stuck itself in our brains due to the literary connections it had. We like, and we have had lots of compliments on it.
